Quit knocking the power companies because you don't have any power! The high lines are individual wires strung out between poles in the rain, snow and wind. They flex back and forth between insulators. Eventually they snap. Imagine you are trying to troubleshoot an outlet in your house. Start at the end outlet and backtrack through the whole house until you work your way back to the main panel. Basically this is what the line guys do. Multiply this by any number of houses on a crib line and a distribution line and see what sort of spider's nest and can of worms you have.
