I am seeking advice about sewer lateral repair/replacement.
I live in Southern California (Glendale) in a 1920's era house in a steep canyon. My sewer lateral runs downhill approximately 35-40 feet from a curbside clean out trap to the city saddle in a circuitous S-like pattern. The pipe runs from 4 feet deep at the trap and goes to about 7 feet deep. The lateral has a minor separation approximately 11 feet in and at about 20 feet it is jam packed with roots. I don't know what it looks like past 20 feet to the saddle. I’ve had the drain snaked in March of this year, which relieved a blockage, but we're having problems again.
I have had 3 estimates from different plumbing companies who have run a camera. They all say the same thing about the disposition of the pipe. One company is offering and epoxy reline at about $250 per foot plus an initial $2,600 to Hydro Jet the lateral free of roots. They offer a 30-year warranty on the "new" pipe.
Another offered to saw-cut the street to lay a new lateral and a new tie-in at the city saddle, which would eliminate the long S-like run and would shorten the distance to about 10 feet from the trap for about $9,600.
Another offered the same services and was the same price for the epoxy liner but quoted just under $17,000 for the saw-cut.
I guess I am leaning toward the epoxy re-liner but have heard mixed reviews. The downhill slope of the lateral seems like it makes up for the bad design and it seems like a cost effective solution to the problem. Any thoughts on the epoxy relining as it applies to my situation?
