CNTL + Print Screen will take a screen shot
ALT + Print Screen will take a screen shot of just the active window

Paste (CNTL V) it into Paint, or an html email etc

there's a free program called printscreen. whatever you have on your screen the computer will take a screen shot and print it out. control/printscreen doesn't work, alternate/printscreen doesn't work either!

NO it doesn't! I got a dell optiplex machine. I pressed ctl-printscreen and nothing happens. I press alt-printscreen, still nothing happens! I'm running windows xp - professional.

I have Windows XP Professional here as well

you're only going 1/2 way though

Like I said in the first post, once you Cntl/Alt Print screen you need to paste it into something

either an email(html format), your resident Windows Paint program, Adobe Photoshop etc.

too much trouble easier just to go and download printscreen, it stays resident in ram. then all you do is click on printscreen, your printer icon comes up and you are printing. too many steps your way. please go try it.
