  • removing 20 year old glass tub/shower doors

    Greetings -
I want to remove old glass tub/shower doors. It looks like the frame is anchored on each wall but not on the tub - unless by caulking or some fixitive. Could that be true?

What's the best way to remove them - is there a way to take out the shower sliding doors (2 of them) first? then remove the frame? What if the frame "sticks" to the tub - what tool or method should be put into play? [?]

Last but not least, the tub has faux marble enclosure walls (20 years old also. What should I use to "plug" the holes from the screws?

As you can see, my spirit is willing but my knowlege is LIMITED [:I]! Any and all suggestions would be so appreciated. THANKS!

    Jay,

    Welcome to the forum.

I would take a few minutes and closely inspect the door to see how it was originally put together. The doors probably can be lifted slightly and then the bottom will swing out. There may be screws down from the top track down into the sides. By using a small putty knife or a five-in-one painters tool you should be able to cut through and silicone that is holding the frame in places. Taking your time and being careful you can avoid scratching the tub or walls.

If you visit your local hardware store you can probably find some brass or silver trim strips that you can put back on the walls to cover up any holes/marks. One type could be the trim strips that are normally used for flooring thresholds that have insert strips that cover the screws, you can find a great selection of these at most flooring stores in any length you want.

You could also use screw covers, once you remove the side tracks put a screw back in each hole with the bottom piece of a snap coverand you can get these covers in lots of colors and metal finishes.

    Good luck, Jim
