  • Marble Hearth for possible tiling

I have a marble hearth that is a horrible color and it's on the floor in front of the fireplace. It has a crack in it and I'd like to look into the possibility of tiling over this hearth.

Can anyone suggest a method for tiling and a study type of tile. I need to put the fireplace screen, log holder and tool holder on this hearth.

Or...are there other possibilities to hide this monstrosity?

    Thanks!

    Kate,

You could go to your local flooring shop and pick out virtually any floor tile to apply over the marble. You should be able to use a standard tile adhesive. Just take a measurement of the existing hearth so you can pick a size of tile that reduces the number of cuts required and looks good. The existing marble will show along the front edge unless you apply something to cover it also.

Have you priced a new solid piece of material from a local stone shop. It may look better to remove the existing slab and install a new single slab again, only in a color you like! Also this way you wouldn't have a slight drop down into your firebox and lose the little bit of height in the opening.

    Good luck, Jim
