Reinforcing the underneath of countertop

Hi,
We recently paid to have our kitchen countertop, and snack bar replaced. We noticed as we removed the old countertop that the overhang, which was 10inches, was reinforced from underneath with particle board, so when the new countertop was installed we noticed it was NOT reinforced from underneath. It was bolted down, but not with additional reinforcements. Now a month later 2 of the seams are beginning to raise, very slightly. I'm assuming it's because of the lack of reinforcment. How customary is it to have additional support on the underneath? Thanks so much for your help.

Laura,
When I am installing a counter with a greater than usual overhang (more than 2") I always apply another piece below. You can apply an underlay that is no thicker then 'A' in the diagram below and at the depth of 'B'. If there are seams in the countertop you have to ensure the seams in the underlay are offset from the ones above. Use a good quality adhesive and screws that are the proper length. If you are concerned about screwing right up through the top, use a pan head screw and small washer to ensure you do not countersink them.

I have a 13" by 8' overhang on my island eating level and with this and three supports that come out 6" I have had no problems.
