  • setting the limiters

I have inherited a Craftsman Garage Door opener model #139655000. I am having a problem setting the door opening and closing limiters inside the assembly. Because I don't have the manual everything about getting the door to open and close properly is second guessing. Does anybody out there have any suggestions on how I can adjust these. The door would not open all the way and close all the way. Now it opens to far and runs into the top of the motor unit. I have tried to adjust this by setting this back to the original positions with no good results!

    please help

Rick, sounds like you put the cover back on too soon, the up adjustment has popped off the plastic threaded rod and you can turn the adjustments all day to no avail. the center threaded rod is turned by the motor with a threaded plastic traveler that moves opposite direction of threading and carries a mast with copper arm protruding left and right. the two plastic screws you adjust on side of unit are longer and paralell to this threaded rod and each carry their own plastic traveler with a copper contact which you position proportional to how far you want to travel in up or down direction. you will likely find the up traveler hanging in the breeze as it can pop off if it gets driven past the end of threading. it is a simple snap on. note all three threaded rods are also snap in out devices in the plastic chasis so take time to ensure none of these has poped out either. they rarely go bad
