  • Refrigerator Compressor tests

    Hi,
I am new here and a green tech.I am working on a Frigadaire refrigerator model # FPCI19TIFW0. The people bought it used. When they plug it in the compressor runs for one minute and then clicks out. 2 minutes later it comes on again, runs for a minute and clicks out.I let it run for alittle while and the condenser coils stayed room temperature. I took the relay and overload out of the compressor box. The relay is solid state and my manuals say it takes special equipment to check it. I did check the overload and compressor leads as my manual stated, and they checked out ok.Is there anyway I can tell if the compressor is shot or if it's the relay without buying a $30 relay for a test piece? Thanks

Every technician should stock some 3n1 start relays.
If the relay does not fix it you have it for stock.

You could check the compressor to see if its shorted to ground.
You could also ohm out the compressor windings.

You could check the start relay with a volt meter to see if it's putting power to the run and start winding.

If I was in someone's home repairing this I would just go out to the truck and get a new relay to plug in and try.

Does the compressor get hot before it stops running?
If the compressor gets hot in the short time it runs before it turns off you have a problem with the compressor.
