  • Help With Kenmore Elite Refrigerator!

I have a Kenmore Elite refrigerator 79577579600 side by side, freezer bottom. Months ago noticed water dripping from the bottom of the ice/water dispenser down the front of the door. Ice maker was not working 100% and found a large crack in the ice holder bin. Thought possibly the crack was letting air in and causing the ice to melt into a large mass and consequently drip out the bottom. Replaced both ice maker and ice bin and the problem persists. Help! The door is getting ruined with rust. Drip is slow and almost unnoticeable.
PS- Did notice that with the new ice maker, the ice is clumping and melting into a solid mass on one side of the bin- perhaps the new one doesn't work either?
    Thanks!

Well, I actually have no idea what it might be, but first shut off the water to the unit that will tell you if its a leak and not condensation, if it still shows water with the water shut off you have a air leak condensation problem, at least you would narrow it down, if it stops leaking with the water shut off, time for invasive surgery to find the cause.

      Poor water pressure?

It is very unlikely room temperature air getting in would melt already frozen ice. The most it would usually cause is frost on cold surfaces. LOTS of HOT air would be required to melt ice cubes inside a cold freezer.

      Water valve seeping?

If the electric water valve on the fridge is not closing tightly while not in use, water might continue to seep through it resulting in dripping from the dispenser and/or leaking into the ice bin where it freezes the cubes into a block. If the fridge or ice bin is not level, that block might only form on one side of the bin or the other.

A common cause of an appliance water valve 'seeping', is too little water pressure to the refrigerator. That could be due to a partially clogged sediment screen (if used) in the water line where it connects to the fridge or a kink in the water line. The most common cause however is the type or way a water valve was mounted on the house water line for the fridge's water supply.

If a 'self-piercing' saddle vavle was used, or any kind of saddle vavle was mounted on the underside of the house water pipe, it is suspect and should be replaced ASAP. Only a drill type saddle should be used (if not a regular plumbing tap) and only mounted on the top of a horizontal pipe or mounted on the side of a virticle pipe.
