  • Whirlpool dryer electrical plug change

We have a Whirlpool dryer that is several years old. When we moved two years ago, I had to change the electrical cord/plug from the style with a prong in the middle to the newer style (4 prongs around the perimeter).

We moved again and this house has the old style four prong with 3 posts around the perimeter and one in the middle.

Is it OK to be changing back and forth with this?

I don't know why the changes in configuration - all dryer receptavles should be universal cept for the three wire. Yes you can cgange the pigtail yet again - no problem

Here are two pictures of the project.

PLUG: The black plug is the existing one-- the gray plug is the one I need to use.

CONNECTION: The gray connection has three wires with the middle one marked neutral. The existing (black) connection has red, white, black and green.

I am guessing that the "neutral" wire is white. If that is correct, how do I match up the two remaining gray wires to the red or black?

Am I toast if I do this backwards?

I have a diagram in the "illustrations" showing the dryer connections to the terminal block. [Four wire] Black hot, Red hot, White neutral Green equipment (frame) ground.
In earlier diagrams the dryer terminal block has the green ground and neutral on same center terminal connection. All new construction requires the receptacle to be a four wire. This used to be true ONLY in mobile homes but they extended it to all homes now!
