  • Electric to gas conversion cost

I want to remove my electric range/oven and replace it with a gas one. Anyone know what it would cost me to have someone run the gas line into the kitchen for me. My water heater and furnace are gas and they are located in the basement not too far below the kitchen. I estimate the line would have to be about 20-25 ft long. If it helps, i live in New York and my basement is unfinished. I think it would be an eaasy fix.

It's already broke, so try to fix it.

The best way for you to gauge price is by calling around and getting at least 3 estimates locally. It's possible that you could even do this yourself, though you'd have to be a DIYer and measure good since you'd probably order the piping sized to your specifications. Most old fashioned hardware stores or plumbing supply houses have gas pipe and will cut the threads for you.

Here's a link that explains a bit about what you'd be in for, if you feel uncomfortable doing this, then by all means hire a pro. Working with gas can be dangerous if not done properly.

You'll also need to install a 120 volt receptacle in the back of your stove to supply power for the clock/timer.

Of course Lazy Pup is the resident pro plumber here and I'm sure he'll have some great advice for you so hang on.

The receptacle for the electric stove is a 220 volt stove receptacle and it's protected by a 40 amp or 50 amp double pole breaker. You cannot use this for your gas stove. You will need to pull new wire of 14 or 12 gauge up to the back of the stove and connect a 120 volt receptacle to it. Then you'll need to replace the existing double pole breaker with a single pole 15 or 20 amp breaker.

** The receptacle for the electric stove is a 220 volt ... You cannot use this for your gas stove. **

There are adapters that are avaiable which will plug into a 240 volt wall outlet to provide a single 120 volt outlet for a gas appliance. They are also usually internally fused so no changes are necessary at the fuse/breaker panel.

Check a local 'big box' hardware store.

          JFYI

Well expect it to be $100-$300 I guess. Call and have some plumbers/gas tech's. look at it. It sounds like an easy job but materials and labor are high these days.
