  • frigidaire GAS DRYER not working..HELP

Hello, today I was doing lots of laundry and my GAS DRYER was working just fine..I took out one dry load and out in another and turned it on when it started making an AWFUL LOUD noise...I turned it back off and noticed it is not TURNING...I unplugged it awhile..and let is rest...but 8 hours later still the same thing.

any ideas of what this could be??
it is a very loud cranking sound kinda hard to explain...

I do not know how old it is (it came w our house 3 yrs ago) but I would guess 10 yrs old...I have not had any problems w it before, and it has been acting normal lately...thanks for anything to check out!!

There is a back bearing mounted on an X frame. The front of the drum rests and spins on felt "bearings". There's a large belt that goes through an idler and then the motor pulley and around the drum. If there's lint on the idler the drum will go thump thump as it turns. If the bearings on the motor are shot, a thermal overload will trip out and it won't spin.

The most common place for loud screeching sounds (if that's what the sounds are) to come from on that dryer design is the rear drum bearing worn and the metal shaft (see the following link) rubbing on the metal bearing support plate. If left grinding away too long, the drum shaft can get cut right in half allowing the drum to drop right off.

Other possibilities may include worn front drum support bearings and seal (see the link below), the idler (belt tension) pulley or the motor itself (as HayZee518 suggested). Someone would need to look into it to see what the problem is in your case.

thanks for all info...is this something me and my Dh could maybe look at?? we are both pretty handy just no real knowledge of dryers....I was thinking by what I have read perhaps it is the belt???? because it is not tumbling. and it worked fine and then all the sudden LOUD Noise when running...kinda like the sound of when something is disrutping your garbage disposal you know? it is like a disrupting sound.............normal sound of the dryer w soemthing cranking sounding in it....make sense??

** I have read perhaps it is the belt???? because it is not tumbling. **

If the belt broke or fell off, that may be a possibility for the not turning.

** all the sudden LOUD Noise when running... kinda like the sound of when something is disrutping your garbage disposal you know? **

That wouldn't likely have anything to do with the belt. Someone would have to check the other things that were mentioned.

I'm afraid I have no idea what you are capable of. Dryers are usually reasonably simple appliances to attempt to service. Although not for your exact dryer model, the service manual available at the following link should be applicable to most modern (in the last 20 years) Frigidaire dryers. It might be a help to a complete novice.
