    pilot valve

somewhere in here I have an exploded diagram of a MR HEATER infrared propane heater.
The bulb that goes into the flame is a thermopile and generates a millivolt signal that is applied against an electro magnet inside the pilot valve.
As long as there is a flame a voltage is generated and is applied to the electro magnet inside. it is acting against a spring which snaps the valve closed when the flame goes out or is interrupted.
inside a regular gas valve is a similar setup but when the pilot flame is established, it opens another port which allows the main valve to open and light your main burner.
a thermopile generates a voltage. a thermostat operates a bellows type diaphragm off pressure inside the cappillary tube and in turn operates a contact or mechanical part of the main valve.
