  • Maytag DIshwasher Motor only hums.

My 2000 Maytag dishwasher just stopped working. WHen the motor should kick on, it just hums for a few seconds and then stops humming, and never turns.

I don't know what the chances of something getting to the motor from the dish compartment and causing it to bind. The timer keeps going through the cycle, but the motor never turns. I get water, and I think it will still drain, but at the moment it isn't draining no matter what position I turn the dial to. I turned it because I didn't wantto wait a full cycle to drain, this is when I noticed that I couldn't find a spot on the dial where it would drain. It did drain on the last load of dishes we did this morning. Any help will be appreciated. Joe in Florida [8D]

I took the motor housing slash water pump apart and found that the plastic disk that hangs above the impeller had melted to the impeller. I don't think this was an accident, maybe it ran dry. It's anybodys guess how that happened. In any case the motor, which costs $171 from the repair clinic is not needed. I first have to find out how this happened, then clean the parts and put them back together.
This support site is not much when it comes to support. Maybe it will get better when more people use it.

I took the motor assembly off of the machine and dissasembled it. In the top of the unit, after removing several parts, there is a impeller housing.
In the impeller housing there are two parts that should stay together. It is called an assembly. The housing has channels in to which jet the water from the impeller. The channels have a round plastic disk that should be firmly attached to the top of the channels, directly above the impeller, which is mounted to the top of the motor. When you are at this point of the motor, you only have the motor and the impeller, all other parts are sitting in a pile next to you. You need a allen key to take the housing apart, as well as a nut driver or small socket wrench.
The plastic disk that covers the channels in the impeller housing came loose and started to bind between the impeller and impeller housing. It generated enough heat to melt the top of the impeller and fuse it to the other palstic part that came loose.
If they didn't get too damaged, you can srape and clean the parts, then epoxy the impeller housing parts back together. Be sure to wait a day for the epoxy to sure, and not get any extra epoxy on the top of the parts , between the impeller and impeller housing. This is a tight area, and anything extra will cause the parts to bind. Put it all back together and wash your dishes. This was a defective part that should have never come apart in the first place. The good news is that the motor was not bad. The Reapairclinic.com has the impeller housing for $6.20, but they were out of stock, so I epoxied the old one. Good luck to anyone that attempts this repair.

Joe, My Maytag is doing the same thing that yours did. As I am a women, I have no idea about taking motors apart. Maybe I should just buy a new dishwasher. Any advice? Thanks
