In the spin mode my Whirlpool washer drum moves around more then normal making a banging sound. It looks like whatever was holding the drum centered in the washer broke loose. What do I do to fix this?
I'm afraid that is not enough information to identify the appliance in question. What is needed is its exact model number. If you post it we can look up to see what appliance design you're dealing with.
On the most common Whirlpool washer design the top does NOT come off, the whole cabinet is removed for service. But if the OP posts the machine's model number we can look it up to see for sure instead of guessing.
BTW. Has the machine been moved or relocated immediately prior to this occurrence?
.
On that model out of balance can occur if the suspension spring(s) (item #3 in the 'Machine Base Parts' illustration of the parts manual you linked to) were broken, weakened with age or just fallen off. Another common cause is worn/broken suspension pads (#'s 16 and 18 in that same illustration).
If the washer had been moved or even laid down for some reason, the triangular suspension plate (item #17) could just have just moved out of place.
Whirlpool washer model number LA7000XTW0
On that model the whole cabinet (less back panel) is removed for service of internal components. While not for your specific job, you can read about removing the cabinet on that design of washer at this link:
