  • Refrigerator: Frigidaire Model # FRS23R4AW6 - Not Cooling

Refrigerator: Frigidaire Model # FRS23R4AW6 side-by-side was purchased in 2002.
The lights are on, the fan is running, the compressor is not hot it is rather cold l to the touch and there is not noise at all, really not running.
Both the fridge and the freezer are not cooling. Is the problem with the compressor or/and relay/overload. Is there a test I can run to find out the exact problem. Thanks for the help

    the fan is running
What fan? the one inside the freezer or the condenser motor by the compressor... or both?

Both the fridge and the freezer are not cooling... [compressor is] really not running.
If that is true, that will be why it isn't cooling (see the following link).

LINK > My frost free refrigerator is not cooling properly. What might be the problem?

Is the problem with the compressor or/and relay/overload.
If both freezer and condenser fan motors are running, the compressor should be too. Getting power but not running could be caused by either.

Is there a test I can run to find out the exact problem.
There are special tools required to directly test the compressor which most homeowners wouldn't have. The relay and overload can't be directly tested for functionality as it requires being still connected to the compressor to operate. On some overload designs just its terminals can be isolated and tested for continuity. Completely open (no continuity) would indicate a failure of it. I do not know if you can isolate those therminals on the relay used on your model (see the following link).

    LINK > Frigidaire FRS23R4AW6 Relay/Overload Asm.

Someone might be able to test to at least make sure power is getting to the relay and overload protector and that there is not just a problem in the power supply leading to it. If power IS getting to the relay and overload but the compressor shows no sign of life, the problem could be either the relay/overload asm. or in the compressor itself.

Now there is a buzzing sound every two minutes

      Hi Dan,

      Thanks for the reply.
I meant the fan next to the compressor.
I took off the relay and put it back, now I hear a buzzing every 2 minutes, this sound goes for 10 seconds. Also the compressor is now warm to the touch. What does this mean? Thanks.

That is likely the relay powering the compressor but the overload cutting it out as a safety precaution. That could still be caused by a problem in the relay/overload unit or compressor itself.

It means the compressor IS getting power but if it is not running, it should NOT be left that way. Allowing the relay to click on and off for an extended period of time without the compressor actually running could damage the compressor... if it isn't already the cause.

Compressor not working. But ohm reading looks good

My Frigidaire Model # FRS23R4AW6 is not working.
The fan next to the compressor is working.
I replaced both the relay/capacitor but still the compressor is not starting.
I did a ohm reading of the compressor, it looks good:
          C-S = 9.3
          C-R = 4.1
          S-R = 5.7

Is there another test or check before I gave up on this frig? Thanks

there is something called a hot start cable for a compressor.

A technician might try installing a 'hard start kit' (relay/overload/start capacitor assembly - see the following link) on it but they are not usually a long term solution and can not even be used on some of the newer compressor's in service without damaging them in a short period of time. I'm afraid I believe the compressor used on your model is of the newer design and would not work with one for long... if it even did at all.
