Washer estimated 10 years old [came with house]. Used almost daily [have messy dogs]. Washer developed what I believe to be symptoms of drawing high current. I'm an electrician checking my friends washer. Initial complaint is that the lights flicker when it is running [hasn't happened before]. I checked breakers and wiring at panel. I even took the wire for the washer circuit and touched it directly on the buss lug and flickering of lights still occurred. I put amprobe on wire to monitor current when washer was running. When motor initially starts, starting current pegs at what appears to be a bit over the 9.8 amp rating on the machine's nameplate [about 10-12 amps] It was difficult to get an accurate reading due to analog tester and quick needle movement. When running the motor draws about 6 amps and the tester needle as well as the lights flickers to the tempo of the agitation of the machine. There is also a brief dimming whenever the motor changes cycle and restarts. My guess is this [and I would like your confirmation and /or feedback]: Is it possible that over the years with such major use, the motor's windings insulation is breaking down from being over heated and fatigued and drawing a high current because of this? Could it be something as simple as a bad capacitor or is it time for a motor replacement or new machine? Any info you can provide would be appreciated.
