  • Kenmore 70 Series dryer stains clothes, takes over 90 minutes to fully dry

My wife and I purchased a used Kenmore 70 Series dryer (model number: LER7646EQ2) last winter and it's never performed as well as we had hoped.

We have three main problems with the dryer:
    1. Loads of towels or jeans take between 90 and 110 minutes to fully dry.
    2. The dryer is covered in lint after just a few loads, even though we empty the lint trap after every cycle.
    3. The dryer occasionally streaks clothes with a brown stain that is very difficult to remove. There is no rust visible in the drum.

The streaking is the problem we're most concerned about.

Unfortunately, the previous owners of the dryers were smokers, meaning that we had to clean the dryer extensively after buying and installing it.

And while I'm no expert on connecting dryers, I checked the duct running from the dryer to the wall and the connection seems to be secure. I also asked our apartment complex to check and make sure that there isn't a clog between the utility closet in our apartment (where we have our washer and dryer installed) and the outside air vent.

We're not expecting high-end performance from a used dryer, but the dryer has been a disappointment almost from day one. Taking 90-110 minutes to dry a load of towels is bothersome, but knowing that the dryer could ruin a piece of clothing in any given cycle is enough reason to want to kick it to the curb and buy a replacement.

My wife and I would like to wait until we move into a house before purchasing a new dryer. Is there anything I can do to improve the performance of this dryer and, more importantly, keep it from staining clothing?

    Check venting!

The streaking is the problem we're most concerned about.
You shouldn't be! The lint outside of the dryer and the dryer not drying properly are almost sure signs of poor venting (see the following link) which can be a very real fire hazard!

I STRONGLY suggest you discontinue dryer use and look into the dryer's venting *all the way from the dryer to the outdoors* RIGHT AWAY!

That is the model number of a Whirlpool branded dryer not a Kenmore. Maybe someone switched the name on it?

Clothing may be getting caught between the drum and the stationary parts of the dryer.

'ello, I'm the wifey of Peretz.

The layer of lint outside the dryer I haven't been as concerned about. Because it could easily just be what falls off the lint trap when I take it out to clean it. Since it's not like I wipe down the dryer as much as I probably ought to. I'm confident that the vent is the correct length. We can't see what's between our laundry room and the outside of the apartment, though. However, when we had some problems early on with our previous (even older, even crappier) dryer, maintenance came out and assured us that there was no problem on that front.

However, I do think we need to have them out again to be sure....

Apartment maintenance people will do as little as possible. quite frankly I don't think they care. they should remove the vent hose and actually look inside it not just say "its clean!" and put it back. since the vent exits into a master duct there's no way you can tell where it's going or empties out.
