  • Refigerator Smell

I have a Frigidaire refrigerator, Model # FRT18P6BSB2 and there is a rotten food smell coming from both the top freezer and the main fridge. We have completely cleaned out the inside and washed out everything. We have put boxes of baking soda inside and it still stinks when the door is opened. I took the back
plastic panel off and cleaned off the coils and drip panel. I looked every were as it seemed if something dead could be inside Nothing....
We are at wits end on this. The unit works well other wise and is around 4 years old.

The same air is circulated through the whole cabinet so a smell anywhere will be everywhere.

You mean the evaporator (cooling) coil inside the freezer or the condenser coil by the compressor?

There is a slim possibility some odors might emanate from the drain system beneath the evaporator coil. The trough there and the drain that leads to the bottom drain pan might be able to be flushed with a mild detergent/water solution. Scum or stray food stuffs can sometimes (fairly rarely) build up in the drain tubing and rot.

Some Frigidaire refrigerator models had a problem with the drain pan under the fridge giving off pungent odors. That required the drain pan to be replaced. I don't know that occurrence is common on your particular model of Frigidaire refrigerator or not.

Other than that, the only place any odors should be produced would be food spillage inside the cabinet somewhere or a slim chance of burning wires.

      Wrflyer

At the bottem of the Frig, I removed a white panel, the length of the frig.
There I could see the compresser on the left and a set of coils that a small fan blows air on. That is what I cleaned off, mostley dust and cat hair. It really wasn't all that dirty, but the smell is getting worse.
I also dumped some pinesol cleaner in the drip pan. I checked on back of the frig and there isn't any other panels to remove. I looked inside the top freezer, and there is a coil behind a pannel with some vents.

That is what you must be talking about. I will once again remove everything from the unit (it is below freezing out side any way) and remove the freezer pannel and clean off the coils. It seems to be coming from there anyway.
Thanks for your help. I'll let you know how it goes.
      Merry Christmas........

the small fan blows air on the condenser to remove the heat from the refrigeration process. the whole refrigeration process is absorbing heat by the circulating freon, giving up that heat in the condenser, re-compressing the freon to a high pressure gas (because a liquid cannot be compressed) feeding it back to the evaporator to start the heat absorption process again.

          Yes.

I will remove everything from the unit and remove the freezer pannel and clean off the coils.
And also the drain beneath it.

Make sure it is unplugged before you start.

            Refigerator Smell

I removed the inside back panel and found a like new set of coils. I cleaned them anyway with a mixture of water and pinesol. I removed the vent tray, and cleaned all that. We didn't put any food back for a few days, to see what happened.
Still smells after a few days. I am going to look for sone kind of in Frig
fan or air filter system. Any ideas, I am open to most anything.
