Effect of Cat Litter box by the furnace

We have 2 cats and their litter boxes are two feet from the furnace. We just got a new high efficiency furnace and my husband says we must move the litter boxes or else the furnace will be ruined. Is this true?

I can see no reason why you cannot have cat boxes near a furnace, other than "over spray" if that's a problem. The furnace recycles air from inside the home via the return vents not from the area around the furnace. The combustion air is pulled in from the exterior of the home.
