  • oven bake element failure

The bake element "went off like a roman candle". There is a yellow residue all over the interior of the oven. What is this chemical? Is it toxic? How do I clean it up so I can replace the element?
The oven is Whirlpool model RB160PXL.

They often go more like a fireworks sparkler (see the following link).

You can see the replacement element for your model and read general tips on replacing an oven element at the following links:

I don't know exactly what the residue would consist of. While I don't suggest you eat it, I very much doubt it would affect things cooked in the oven.

How do I clean it up so I can replace the element?
I would think mild soapy water on a rag would be find. If necessary using a spray-on oven cleaner *that is safe for self-cleaning ovens* or just running a self-clean cycle afterward would likely suffice. Some smoking may occur with the initial use of the replacement element so you might want to keep a nearby window open.

Some discoloration of the porcelain oven liner may remain for good unfortunately.
