  • Whirlpool Side by Side not cooling

My 3 year old Whirlpool side by side refrigerator just stopped cooling. The condensor coils were real clogged, which I vacuumed out and cleaned real good. All fans are spinning good; no ice anywhere. The frig has warmed up enough now that no frost anywhere is possible, and still no cooling. It runs continuously and I hear an occasional click which I think is coming from underneath in back, aka the compressor. I turn the timer test switch and it does shut the frig off, but when I turn it some more it comes back on -- but I'm hearing fans only -- I don't think I'm hearing the compressor kick on. The fix it manual I have lists the most likely failures (that I'm sure is not caused by other conditions) is:
    defrost timer
    thermostat.
    the model is Whirlpool ED25TEXHW01
--Any ideas are greatly appreciated...I am technically inclined.

    Hi,
The clicking sound you are hearing is the start relay on the compressor.
The compressor can not start because the start relay is bad and needs to be replace.

If you remove the back cover and take a look at the compressor I think you will find that the start relay looks something like the white one in the photo I'm posting.

Let us know what you find,

I have a similar problem, and had this happen a couple of years or so ago, but, I cannot recall what it exactly was, but I think it was the relay.

The model I have is the ED25TEXHW00 and the click of death is happening...

is the relay that white thing on the side of the compressor? (can't see the pic)

        Thanks

** ED25TEXHW00 and the click of death is happening... is the relay that white thing on the side of the compressor? **

Yes, and that style of relay (the white body ones) seems to be more prone to such failures, more so than older style compressor relays were.

          ** can't see the pic **

You can see a picture of the one used on your (and many other Whirlpool, Kenmore and KitchenAid ) fridge models at the following link:

BTW. Don't allow the fridge to continue to click on and off or permanent damage can be done to the compressor ($$$+).

          JFYI
