  • Old washer REALLY NOISY!!

Lady Kenmore portable compact washing machine
    Model 110-7460600
    Vintage mid-1970s

It's me again. Now that I've got this old lady spinning, and the agitator usually works, but she's incredibly noisy. Maybe always so, and nowadays I'm just more sensitive to it, but I think it's actually worse. Anyway, it's bad enough that it could annoy the neighbors.

It's the kind of noise(s) you'd expect from a washing machine: geary sounds and like a huge tray of dishes rattling. Nothing that sounds "dangerous," just Very loud.

Nothing in the lower mechanicals rattles when I touch it, and the tub appears to be firmly tightened onto the spindle. Shaking and bounding the tub produces no rattle.

It suppose it's inside the transmission, in which case there's no hope of repairing that. But still a couple hopeful questions:
    • Is there any way of getting lubrication into the transmission, other than removing it?
    • The racket continues even when the agitation has stopped and the water is discharging. I wouldn't think simply the pump could be making all this racket, and besides, I think the pump is plastic? What else continues to function unchanged once the water discharge starts?
The spin cycle is quiet like a hummingbird. Well, relatively.

the transmission wig wag continues to operate. the drive belt to the transmission spins, the pump operates. the oil in the transmission is 90 weight gear oil. the drum spins, creaks come from the suspension springs.................what else?

You mean there's supposed to be oil in the gearcase???

I wonder if I could drill a filler hole in the housing and tap a plug? Am figuring it would hardly add to the amount of metal shavings in there.

when the gearcase was put together oil was added to one half of the transmission then a gasket was installed and the top half was bolted in place. the case is white metal so I doubt you could even thread a pipe tap in there.
you question " is there supposed to be oil in there? well there's gears in there. Do you have oil in the rear differential in your car? there's gears in there too!

Sorry. I thought the big grin icon would indicate that I was joking.

Thanks for the tip. Okay, I won't try drilling, but it sure sounds like the tub's several months of leaking washed out that oil.

Luckily, I also have soundproofing skills.
