Sony Mini Hi-Fi System (MHC-RG660)

I have a Sony Mini Hi-Fi Component System (MHC-RG660) which has developed a fault. It will suddenly switch itself off and the power button flashes. I then unplug the system and switch it back on but it immediately switches itself off again with the power button flashing. I have done the checks suggested in the troubleshooting manual and it is none of the those.
What could be the problem?

how much electronic troubleshooting experience have you? if the internal components have sockets, then troubleshooting is possible. if your ICs are soldered in, then its really a lot of hassle to unsolder and re-solder ICs. Solder bridges between the foils are a big problem, also lifting the foil because of too hot an iron will cause problems. off hand I'd say the problem is in a current sensing circuit in the power supply, could be a triac gated off or a burnt current limiting resistor.
