  • Adding adjustable shelves to kitchen cabinets

Hi everyone, what’s the best way to add adjustable shelves to kitchen cabinets without damaging them?

  • #2
Hi! The most common approach is to drill small holes with a shelf pin jig, allowing the shelves to be adjusted up or down without compromising the strength of the cabinet. Another option is to mount vertical tracks on the back panel instead of the side walls, which reduces stress on the cabinet structure. For a no-drill solution, there are also insert-style organizers that fit inside and provide adjustable shelving without any modifications.

Another approach is to use tension-style or insert organizers for adjustable shelving when drilling into the cabinet is not an option.

Do the shelf pin holes weaken the cabinet sides over time, or is that not really an issue?

Shelf pin holes don’t normally weaken cabinet sides, since they’re small, shallow, and spaced evenly to spread the load. This is the standard method used in most cabinets, and with a jig the holes stay accurate. The only time issues come up is with thin particleboard or poorly drilled holes, where edges can chip or pins may not hold well. For heavier loads, using thicker pins or extra support helps.

Got it, thanks! Is there a recommended maximum weight that adjustable shelves can safely hold when using shelf pins?
