  • Kitchen cabinets

Hello everyone! I am having issues with my kitchen cabinets. They are starting to rot and I have even lost a door of my cabinet which is directly under the kitchen sink due to water damage. I know the issue should be resolved with plumbing, as some of the water from the sink sometimes comes down but what is a good material for kitchen cabinets that is sustainable?

    Thank you in advance!

    Hi Downaski,

Water damage is a real pain, especially under the sink where moisture tends to build up. It's smart of you to recognize that fixing the plumbing should be your first step – that'll help prevent future problems. As for sustainable cabinet materials that can stand up to moisture, you've got a few good options. Bamboo is a popular choice because it grows quickly and naturally resists water. If you like the look of wood, you could go for recycled or FSC-certified options, which are more environmentally friendly. There are also some interesting materials made from recycled paper and resin that hold up well to moisture. Stainless steel is another option if you're open to a more modern look – it's super durable and can be recycled. Whatever you choose, make sure to use safe adhesives and finishes, and try to source materials locally if you can. It's a balancing act between sustainability, durability, and style, but with some research, I'm sure you'll find a solution that works for your kitchen.

Hmm, what about concrete cabinets? Are they a good option?

Concrete cabinets are definitely an interesting option – they've been gaining popularity in modern kitchen designs lately. Let's break it down a bit.

On the plus side, concrete is incredibly durable and can be highly resistant to water damage when properly sealed. This could be great for your situation, especially in that problematic area under the sink. Concrete is also versatile in terms of aesthetics. You can color it, polish it, or leave it raw for different looks. It's a sustainable choice too, as concrete is long-lasting and can be made with recycled materials. However, concrete comes with its own set of challenges. It's heavy – really heavy. This means your kitchen floor needs to be able to support the weight, and installation can be tricky. Concrete can also be prone to cracking if not properly reinforced or if there's any settling in your home. While it's water-resistant when sealed, if cracks do form, moisture can seep in and cause issues.

Maintenance is another factor to consider. Concrete needs to be sealed regularly to maintain its water resistance and prevent staining. And while it's durable, it's not indestructible – chips and scratches can happen and aren't easy to repair. Cost-wise, concrete cabinets can be more expensive than traditional options, especially if you're going for custom work. But they can also last a lifetime if well-maintained.

It's definitely a unique choice that could solve your moisture problems, but it's not without its complexities. If you're seriously considering it, I'd recommend talking to a contractor who has experience with concrete cabinets. They can give you a better idea of how it would work in your specific kitchen setup.
