What's the difference between grounding and bonding? Read some stuff about marine application and do not understand.

    confusing words

The terms are defined in Article 100 and 250.2 of the NEC. Section 250.4 provides the performance requirements of Article 250. Grounding is a connection to earth, and bonding is the connection of items to each other.
what that means is that a panelbox is grounded by one conductor either to a driven ground rod or a water pipe in direct contact to the earth.
bonding is the interconnection with everything else on the system.
example: the neutral bar is grounded by a conductor to a water pipe ground. the neutral bar is bonded to the panelbox by a jumper or a screw.

in the case of a boat, because there is no earth to connect to, the ground is a copper or bronze plate bolted to the outside of the hull in direct contact with the water and connected by a wire to the panelbox.
in the case of a metal hulled vessel the entire metal parts are bonded together by bolts or weldments and fastened to the panelbox that makes intimate contact with the vessel's structure.
