  • Converting a 110 outlet to a 220 outlet

Is it ok to just remove a 110 outlet and replace it with a 220? Will it work correctly. I just purchased a new home and there is a gas hook up for my dryer, unfortunately my dryer is electric. I also have a fuse box in my home. If I am able to replace the 110 outlet with a 220 will I have to use a different type of fuse than I am currently using? Thanks for the help..

Brad: You can use the original 120v wiring if it is 3-conductor and has the current capacity required, which is, assumedly, 30a for a dryer which calls for #10/3 wire. As well, I recommend highly that it is protected by a 240v (tandem) breaker in a subpanel and certainly not fuses (not code).

The existing 110 outlet is probably #12 wire. Which is inadequate for a 220 30 anp circuit. (dryer)
You have to bring a new 10-3 wire from the panel to the new dryer plug. And then install a 220 volt 30 amp breaker in the panel.
