  • Floating neutral

My wife bought a new range that needed 220v. I wired a couple of new breakers to a sub panel. The breakers are combined on same side. There is 110v on each leg but not 220 across to primarys. Is it because the breakers are on same side of panel or do I need to do something extra with the neutral. I understand most sub panels have floating neutrals and it was suggested that this was the cause of my problem, but I have no solution.

Make sure your new double throw breaker is installed at different legs of your panel. This will provide 110 volts from each cable when measured to ground or neutral, and 220 volts when measured between cables. Be sure to install a 50A breaker and use #6 cable. I heard that a Neutral (white)cable is also required for small ranges, because they work at 110 volts. Remember, this is just a hint. Always consult a certified electrician.
