  • new recessed lights keep blowing bulbs

Hi there. We just finished installing 4 new recessed lights in a soffit that boundaries our basement rec room. We wired the units just as we have all the other recessed lighting in our house, but for some reason these keep blowing bulbs.

To clarify, they do not flicker or smoke or explode. The bulbs (no matter what brand we use) only last about a week before they go dark. They don't burn out in any particular order, either.

Within the soffit that the lights were installed in is a hot water pipe that feeds our radiators upstairs. It doesn't seem to get too hot to the touch, and the pipes don't make any noise, but we're wondering if there might be vibration from them that causes the bulbs to burn out, overheating from the pipes, or even a problem with the current?

Anyone else encoutner problems such as this or have any suggestions as to what may be wrong? I should also mention that we used a dimmer switch with this installation.

    Many thanks for your help!

Try changing the dimmer control. The dimmer operates by changing the current to DC and operates on part of the ac sine wave.

We'll give that a try this weekend.

      Many thanks!

One other thing, get bulbs rated at 130-145 volts.
