  • Outlet not working correctly

    Here is the problem.

I changed out the electrical outlet in the bedroom. The outlet is supposed to work with the light switch in that when you turn on the light switch what you have plugged into the outlet turns on. The problem is that the outlet stays in the on position and the light switch doesn't do anything.

There are five wires. 1 black, 1 red, 2 white, and 1 ground. I bought a regular outlet for this. Is there a special type of outlet for it kinda like a 3-way light switch but for outlets?

Please help. This thing is driving me crazy

shut the circuit breaker off for this circuit. remove the outlet and examine the side of it where the red/black wires connect. between the two screws you'll see a tab. grab it with needle nose pliers and break it out. put your outlet back into the box and put the cb back on it should work as before.
