my house has old wires and the front porch light has no ground wire.I am replacing it with a new one, is it still safe as long as the light and ground from the light are connected the the metal electrical box.

If the circuit is NOT solidly grounded I wouldn't worry about it. Knob n tube wiring essentially is a safe wiring method. Only thing is they didn't consider the ground as part of the wiring circuit. Just replacing the fixture shouldn't present a problem. If there is no ground present in the box, just don't use it. If you want to upgrade later on, once you pull in the new wire it'll have the ground with it, connect it to the box (if metal) and the fixture's ground wire.
