  • Flickering Dimmer

I've just fitted new Dimmer switch to Dinning room. It works well untill turned down low when the the light flickers, is this common? or would a better quality dimmer swicth work

Try a different style of bulb, or ar least a newer one.
Some older incandescent bulbs will respond to frequency when dimmers are at their lower extremes. You may also notice a hum.

A lot of dimmers operate changing the output to dc through a solid state device called a triac. what this thing does is actually cut off the lower part of the ac sinusoidal wave form and just conduct on the upper part of the sine wave. Older style bulbs have a tungsten filament that is physically larger than modern bulbs. The tungsten looks like a coil spring which is then wound to look like another coil spring and then is fastened to the inside wires. The spring formation when current is applied makes an electromagnet inside the bulbs and doing so it vibrates creating a hum.
