    2 Q's: (Ontario)

    1. Can I install a 3" deep sectional metal box inside a 2"x4" studded interior wall without protecting the wiring where it enters the box? The distance from the cable to the far edge of the stud is 1"?

    2. Is a 1"x3" brace behind 3"x2"x3" ganged boxes (2"x2" brace behind 3"x2"x2-1/2" ganged boxes) acceptable?

    Thanks

A typical 2X4 is 3.5" wide (using dimensional lumber) A 3X2X3 box will fit after the cable clamp screw is cut off flush with the box (on the outside) after clamping the cable. Protection?? on the cable?? No need for protection of the cable. If you are stacking cables, you can't put them within 1" from the front side of the stud without some type of metal plate at least 16 gauge on the stud face.

You can gang up to four boxes without a back brace using the side or front new work bracket on gangable boxes. You can also use two brackets on metal boxes to support the box from both sides using some wooden stringers.
