I don't know what you mean "run in the rain." Most of the ones I've seen in catalogs have the generator portion underslung under the gas tank - so any heat generated by the prime mover evaporates moisture from the workings. The exciter brushes are pretty much hidden inside the generator part. The generator is "self excited" by means of the residual magnetism in the rotor. The AC comes off the stator windings and is fed to the outlets. The frame of the generator should be connected to a driven ground rod.

I can't say that I've recently read the instruction book for a new portable genny but I bet it says to not run the direct rain. Sure most of the workings are "drip proof", but a driving or windy rain will find places it shouldn't.
Also, I have never seen the electrics of a portable genny with weatherproof covers, let alone in-use covers.
Rain does nasty things to portable gennys. I know this from experience.
Also, Hayzee, as long as a portable genset is not hard wired, which is near impossible to legally do anyway, NO grounding electrode or GES connection is required.
