  • orange flashes- what's happening?

something bizarre happened here with my home’s electrical system last spring and i’d love an explanation of what happened:

i work nights, and was lying on the couch one rainy afternoon falling asleep. the previous day had been extremely windy. i had a fire in my woodstove 8 feet away. suddenly, with no warning, the woodstove seemed to totally glow orange, from the stovepipe down, and out from the door a little. i heard a loud electrical hum, and felt a shock (definite, but not really painful) in my index finger. it was over as quickly as it started. i wondered what had happened, and since i was tired and half asleep, i tried to convince myself that maybe just a piece of wood had “exploded” a little in the woodstove.

a few hours later a friend was over, and i’m still not sure how to describe what happened. suddenly, i saw flashes of orange 12 feet away. my friend thought they came from an extension cord, but i’m not sure. this time the power went out. i went out to the circuit breaker box, but none had tripped off. called pg&e and someone eventually came out and saw that my power line was seriously sagging and something was down on the property next door (no one lives there, it just pumps a pool filter). they fixed it the next morning.

i really want to kinow what was happening to my house when i saw the glowing and orange flashes. no one has been able to give me an answer. thanks
