  • Getting power to a shed

I have a 200 amp panel in my house, with open space. I want to power a shed that is about 60 feet from the house. My question is ..What size breaker, what size cable (wanting to bury it), and what size of panel for the shed. I only need like 2 circuits. I plan on shop lights, light on the outside of building, and some outlets for tools....air compressor, table saw and the like. Nothing outrageous!! Thanks in Advance!

you need to figure out in watts what your expected load at the shed would be plus some for future expansion. my garage is fed with four #6 thhn/thwn conductors in 1 inch pvc conduit underground about 24 inches down. the garage panel is called a sub-panel now. I am feeding it with a two pole 50 but a two pole 60 would also work. I have ten outlets, a 240 volt tablesaw and an air compressor. My lighting is three, eight foot twin tubes VHO or "very high output" fixtures. they light up even in the dead of winter. Most flourescents don't - they just sort of glow until they build up enough heat for the mercury inside to vaporize. So if you go with what I got - you'll need a 100 amp MAIN LUG panel, One auxillary ground strip for the panel, three 1 inch PVC LB fittings with covers n gaskets, XXX ft of 1 inch pvc, 280 feet of #6 thhn/thwn, (70ft times 4 = 280) a length of 6/4 romex, connectors for the romex, a 6X6X4 junction box, 78B wirenuts or split bolt connectors, and a 50 or 60 amp breaker.
