Heat tape repair

The end of the heat tape (on gutter not water pipes)got tore off. Can heat tape be repaired? I'd remove the whole line of tape and replace it, but its now under six inches of solid ice.

Help before the whole gutter falls off!

Being there are several types of heat trace wiring,is the Thermostat at this "torn end? or is the Thermostat at the incoming line and is still intact? Hube

Hube, Thanks for responding. There is a 2 inch cylinder shaped "bulge" at the incoming line - I believe this is the thermostat? The torn end only had a very small cap on it.
