  • Combination receptacle and light switch.

I recently put a closet in my basement. In doing that placed a light inside the closet and pulled some wire I had to a wall outlet that was up high for the switch. I installed a standard single pole light switch and all was well. Now I need an outlet back in the closet as through some further renovations I would like to put my cable modem and wireless router in the closet. I thought a combination switch (receptacle on the bottom and switch on top) would work great. I have the “hot” wires that were on the previous outlet and the wires that run to the light right there. Just hook it up and away you go right? I cannot figure this thing out. I installed it in every “safe” way I can think of. I even looked at the directions. I get the outlet working fine but it does not do anything with my closet light.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Follow this diagram and you should have no problem. As always connect all your grounds together and make a connection to the switch yoke with the green screw.
