I bought a 3 unit apartment building. Each unit has it's own meter and service panel. The service comes into the basement where there are three 150 amp disconnect switches and from there it goes up to each unit. I want to put a washer/dryer in one of the units. The problem is the breaker box is in an enclave that would be the perfect place for the W/D, so I want to move it. My plan is to put a junction box where the breaker panel is and extend all wiring to the new location of the service panel. I can use wire nuts for the branch circuits, but how do I handle splicing the service line? I've seen splice bolts, but they aren't insulated. Are there juction boxes made for just this purpose? I realize this is a job for a licensed electrician, but I think I can handle it if I have the proper advice. I do know an electrician who would probably look the job over for a reasonable fee, so I'd like to do the work myself. Thanks.

Once you leave the service disconnect, any panelbox becomes a sub-panel. You'll need a four wire cable - an SER copper or aluminum. A 6X6X6 junction box would be minimum but a 6X8X6 would be better. The splices would be with AL/Cu split bolt connectors, insulated with at least 6 wraps of a quality rubber splicing compound and 4 layers of plastic electrical tape. If the wire is aluminum then an anti-oxidant must be used with the splices.
