cieling fan

I have a 3 speed ceiling fan that the light stopped working but the fan still worked.
Replaced the light switch with the proper switch and then the fan stopped working but light still works correctly.
When I pull the fan switch, I have to pull chain three times and then only get a humming noise on the third pull. The fan turns freely by hand. I thought I had a bad capacitor, so I replace the capacitor with the proper capacitor. The same thing is still happening( three pulls, only to get just a hum on the third pull.

Could I have gotten a bad capacitor or could it be a bad 3 speed fan switch or bad connection up in the housing area?

double check your switch wiring. maybe the replacement has different colors.
the blue wire goes to the lights, the black goes to the switch. I don't know the motor speed wire's colors.

The fan switch is the original switch. It stopped working when I replaced the light switch. It (the 3 speed) fan switch was working fine until I replaced the light switch. It sounds like the capacitor to me, I replaced the capacitor and it still does the samething.

the light switch has nothing to do with the motor of the fan. it receives power from the line and switches the lamp. there's no connection between the light switch and the fan motor.

have you checked the capacitor? do you know how to check the capacitor?

I know the light switch has nothing to do with the fan switch. I replaced the capacitor and it still does the samething. I didn't have the problem with the fan until i replaced the light switch. I know the two a separate controls !

Hayzee thanks for trying to help.Ihad been to the site you recommended a couple of times. With having to pull the fan switch chain three times do you think it could be the fan switch? I brought the capacitor from a guy on EBAY it looks like new capacitor. Other people who had purchased from the guy at this site, gave him good reports. I could have gotten a bad one. I was on another site that said it could be the wall switch. Don't think that is it because the light works and the fan hums in third speed so I know it is getting juice. I haven't really done a thorough investigation.

The funny thing is I had a bad light switch and good fan and when I replaced the light switch that's when the fan stopped working.

I'm just tryingh to follow your train of thought. If you tested the capacitor with a screwdriver and it jumped the gap [sparked] then the cap is good [ un-needed expense] - if you have two speeds but not the third then you may have an open winding. The cap is available for all three speeds. you measure the ohmic resistance with an analog meter to check for continuity or an open. other scenario is a wiring problem with the speed switch, but you say, the light switch was changed NOT the motor switch, so that automatically eliminates the motor switch. That is, unless you completely removed both switches and then re-connected them up. That opens up a can of worms. You may have in-advertently wired the light switch in place of the motor switch. The pull to operate sequence and internal switching is different for a light and motor. I'm trying to help you from my own experience from perhaps 6 thousand miles away.
