  • problem with phone jack wiring

I had a little problem with the phone jack in my kitchen - the jack was broken, so I tried to replace it. When I took the jack off, I found two connectors in the wall. They look like the picture attached.

Now, I have two problems. 1) one of the gray connectors is broken, and I can't seem to find a replacement. 2) The green wire is missing. the hardware store I went to sold me new phone wire, but it was much thicker than the wire coming out of my wall (that's how I broke the gray connector). I thought I could just run wire from above the gray connectors to my new jack, but that won't work since the wires are looped in the gray connectors, and there is nowhere that I can see to tie in to those wires.

Any ideas as to how I can install a new phone jack? Needless to say, I don't have any experience with phone wire and I'm not sure how to fix this.

    Thanks!

a normal telephone circuit consists of the red and green wires called the tip and ring. if it is a party line then the yellow and black is used. take a regular modular jack and connect up the red to the red. plug in a telephone, listen in the handset and apply a jumper from what's in the box to the green terminal on the jack. listen for the dial tone. if you get it, try dialing a number. those splice jacks you have may be connecting to a downstream telephone jack.

Thanks! Do you think there is any way for me to replace the splice jacks? I have looked online and in a few stores, and haven't been able to find them.

since the splice jack is broken and the wires going into them are looped, there is no free end of a wire for me to plug into a modular jack.

      Thanks for your help.

one of the "sets" even because the color is different should have a "live" set. try pulling a little bit to get some slack. radio shack has splice connectors. looks like a clear plastic n red connector. push wires into it and it self strips. then you mash the red button with a pair of pliers.
