We are in the middle of remodeling our upstairs bathroom, and cut out the subfloor to move some plumbing around. I noticed that someone notched the top 2/3 of a 2x8 floor joist to install a toilet flange. It feels very solid... and is probably fine... but I thought that I should post and get some other opinions because I want to do things right. Is there a safe way to repair or reinforce this without sistering a joist the same length as the damaged one. Replacing the entire length of the joist would be very difficult because their is a wall below joist, and a well constructed railing on one end covering the header and end of the beam that the joist is sitting on.
BTW... this is a short (12') joist and doesn't run the width of the house. It has a low live load. Because of our vaulted ceiling and railing, it doesn't support any load bearing walls except the exterior wall at one end. It only needs to bear the weight of a shower, some cabinets, and a person standing in the shower. One end is in an exterior wall, and the other is on a beam in the middle of the house in the vaulted living room. Thanks!
