  • Remove floor joist cross-bracing to insulate?

    Hello,
I have a 1952 fixer upper in a very cold climate. I'm interested in insulating the floor between the floor joists with R19 bats, but there are cross-braces between the joists from the build that would get in the way. Would knocking these braces out cause sagging, bowing, etc of the floor 50 yrs into the life of the house? Any help would be appreciated.

If it were me, I would leave them alone and just install the insulation (notch) to them fairly tightly and neatly.
Otherwise if you do decide to remove them after insulation is done, install a continuous 1x3 strapping directly below where the "X" braces were. That way the joist space is now a 'box' and just as strong as it ever was.
