Really good rug shampoo?

I have old light-colored wall-to-wall carpeting in one room that still looks dingy after I've been over it several times with the Dyson vac.

Anyone have any really good experiences with particular rug shampoos or other cleaners?

Someone told me a good thing to start with would be borax but I have no idea how to do that or whether it would work (probably will spot clean with it and see what happens though).

the suds chemicals they sell with rental of the "RUG-DOCTOR" works pretty good
