Hello, many years ago, out of necessity it was required that a floor joist would be cut to allow for conduit to heat the house via a wood burning stove(no permit acquired).
The floor joist in question is under the cabinets and oven in the kitchen, so it doesnt really support all that much weight on its own, as the cabinets span to the joists on either side of the one in question. about a 1 foot section was cut from the joist.
now comes time to sell the house, and this is a very noticeable feature that the inspector will see(unfinished ceiling in the laundry room underneath the kitchen). what is the proper way to repair this so it is up to code(Minnesota if state has much to do with it, not all that familiar with building codes). Running a parallel stringer next to it is an option, but would require cutting several water lines and then fixing those afterwards, along with trying to maneuver the stringer in a fairly tight space.
would it be acceptable(up to code) to sandwich the cut out area for a reasonable distance from the cut(maybe 2 feet?) with a stringer, or would it need to be a steel plate(if that would even be up to code)
As a final question, if fixed properly, would we still recieve flak from the inspector for doing it in the first place?
Thank you for your time.
