  • Oil Burner & Baseboard Issues:

This year I had my oil burner (3 years old) serviced - cleaning and repair by a new company, I've spent over $1300 and its now shutting itself down frequently, and they're trying to sell me on a reworking of my pipes for another $1200 (includes cirulator) which they claim will solve my problems.

Heres' my situation: I have 3 zones, upstairs, downstairs and water heater. The upstairs zone is noisy, only one bleeder valve in a basebord in the whole zone. When its bled at the boiler, its noisy again in 2 days.

My house was originally an Electric Heat house, and the water heat pipes were retrofitted by the pervious owner. Upstairs, the pipe goes up a closet and into a bathroom where it bends horizontal, and where the only bleeder valve is. Then the pipe goes around the perimeter of the whole second story, it was not bent up and down, just straight through closets, no bleeder valves. Since this oil burner was installed, heat up there was feeble.

Plumber #1 said it needed a zone valve and bleeding. It worked somwhat for a few days then it was cold up there.

Plumber #2 said I needed a new circulator, that the old one was too weak. After he installed it for about $450, the system began to shut down every other day, and chirping noises came from the new circulator Then he told me that my problem is that my circulator is on the supply side, and it needs to be on the return side, and for another $1200 they would repipe and replace the circulator again.

Plumber #3 says it makes no difference whether the circulator is on supply or return, but there is some sort of device that can be installed between my circulator and zone that would eliminate the air problems. Price is between $50 and $600.

I'm confused and feel that no matter how much these guys ask for that I still won't have a trouble free system. Would anyone have any insight on what needs to be done? Also, can bleeder valves be put in a basebord system that has no bends, and would they help me keep my pipes quiet and not strain my circulator?

    Thank you.
