  • Flu damper failed, disabled. Leave it that way?

Electrically-operated flu damper (GVD-5) on my gas-fired boiler system failed (again) and the service tech has no love for these. A little more efficiency but a reliability headache, he says. He bypassed it to get us through the day but when I asked whether it should be replaced, he could not exactly say no, but it was clear that he would leave it bypassed.

    Thoughts?

It sounds like you’re dealing with a bit of a tricky situation with your damper! Since your tech isn’t thrilled about it and has bypassed it, it might be worth considering whether the added efficiency is worth the ongoing reliability issues. Getting a second opinion from another technician could help clarify whether replacing it or finding an alternative solution is the best move. Ultimately, you’ll want to ensure your system is both reliable and efficient, so exploring these options should help you make the best choice for your setup.
