  • Garbage disposal clicks when starting

My garbage disposal has started to make a single loud click when starting. It still spins, and I don't see or feel a foreign object in there (and there's no sound of it bouncing around), there's just a single noisy click and then it appears to operate normally.

Any idea what this may be and how to correct it?

the loud click may be the centrifugal switch inside starting to stick. what the flyball is - the part that moves is mounted on the end of the motor shaft. its basically a plastic or phenolic disk that is spring loaded to pull back when the motor reaches starting torque disengaging the capacitor start switch. when the disposal shuts off you may hear the flyball returning to its start position. if it's really bugging you get a new disposal.
