  • Sudden change in plumbing.

Suddenly, brown water came out of my hot water taps and at the same time the pipes started hammering every time I turn the hot water taps on or off.

    What has happened?

Is a hammer arrestor enough to fix this?

Do you have an expansion tank on the hot water tank, looks like a small cylinder? this has a bladder in it that is pressurised to accommodate the expansion of the water when the heater kicks on. The bladder could have failed.

If the pipes [tubing] in the walls aren't sufficiently fastened to the studs, then every time you turn on the water full blast and shut the line down quickly, the suddenstop of water flow will make the pipes move within the wall giving you the water hammer. most times at a fixture there is about a foot extension above the hot water line. this acts as an air shock absorber in the line. if there isn't you're gonna get that hammer all the time.
